75107 No.8648

It's official. BANDAI Entertainment has included a teaser trailer at the end of the fourth volume of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, confirming that Lucky Star has been licensed by them. Amazon.com, a.f.k, and Wikipedia have all confirmed this. The release will be in the summer of 2008.

BANDAI was probably best fit for it, with all the Haruhi references. They've done wonders with the Haruhi dub, but their QUALITY subtitles will likely carry over.

"Lets hope not"? But surely thats half the joke of Lucky Star, all the references to Haruhi being the fact that the seiyuu is the same person? It pretty much HAS to be for the joke to work.

>> No.8658

>>8653
I think Kari Wahlgren (the voice of Tsuruya) might make a better Konata. Wasn't she one of the contenders to play Haruhi when they ran the audition polls on their website? If necessary, for episode 16, they could replace her voice with Wendee Lee's only when Konata does her Haruhi impression. (They'll also need Wendee Lee for the Haruhi Cola commercial.)

>> No.8659

I think Wahlgren would be most suited for Kuroi. I'd come buckets if she did, anyway.

>> No.8660

>>8659
I could actually imagine Wendee Lee playing Kuroi with her Faye Valentine voice.

They should definitely bring back Sam Regal to play Minoru Shiraishi. Michelle Ruff can play Minami -- she's supposed to sound exactly like Yuki anyway. I wonder if Stephanie Sheh can pull off doing Gotouza-sama?

>> No.8661

>>8657
No, the references to Haruhi wasn't JUST because the seiyuus were the same, it also was because Kyoto wanted to up the hype about Haruhi.

>> No.8662

OH SHI-! I hope they're not going to try dubbing the EDs! Who wants to bother rewriting all those songs, anyway? The only exception would be Akira singing Misoji Misaki... maybe the dub could have her singing an English version in the karaoke booth for the Lucky Channel segment, and the live-action credit sequence could be in Japanese.

>> No.8663

>>8660

Shirashi should be played by Shirashi. That's what I hope, at least. Would the English they teach in Japanese High Schools be good enough to play in an English dub?

If they didn't, then Sam Riegel should do it. He played Taniguchi in the Haruhi dub.

Lee actually would be a good fit for Kuroi now that I think about it. And Wahlgren could easily play Yutaka. But i'm very torn...

More likely than not, they're just going to give Patty a really ordinary voice. But considering that Patty speaks fluent Japanese, except for pronouncing "R"s with an American accent, can you imagine Patty in English having an Upper Midwest accent? Kinda like Pickles the Drummer on Metalocalypse.

They haven't started dubbing yet. The only preview we know about is reportedly on the Haruhi Vol. 4 DVD, which has supposedly been uploaded to YouTube here:

It's just a subtitled version of the scene from ep. 16 at the cosplay cafe where Konata, Patty and Yuki do the Hare Hare dance. There hasn't been confirmation about whether this is genuine yet.

Unnatural intonation! That’s my biggest peeve with English dubs. Somehow, it seems they think the Valley Girl trend that’s been dead and gone for over a decade is still on. A lot of young female characters end up sounding annoyingly snotty in their affected intonation. I’d rather hear Kagami speaking in a thick Scottish Highland twang than sounding like a bloody Valley Girl!

>> No.9914

To clarify, I’m only referring to the Valley Girl intonation, not vocabulary elements such as “like totally” or “gag me with a spoon.”

Heh, Wendee Lee as Konata. Who didn't see that one coming? I'm a little worried about Michelle Ruff as Tsukasa, but then I remembered that she did a pretty good Tsubame in Rurouni Kenshin. Awesome, yes?

Me and a friend went to the Bandai panel, the company licensing Lucky Star.

I was shocked:
A) I could actually stand most of the ENGLISH voices (I'm anti-dub normally).
B) They're actually keeping all the references in the anime (moe, zettai ryouiki) and they will probably have translator's notes as well.

Yeah, I'm really glad Bandai licensed it now.

No lie.
We actually asked them and those were the answers they gave us.

And of course I asked the obligatory "What side of a chocolate cornet do you eat from?"

They're going to give it the Haruhi treatment (never bought the DVD, so I wouldn't know) and will have special editions alongside the regular editions.

One of them will come with an actual chocolate cornet.

FYI, Konata/Tsukasa/Kagami/Miyuki's voice actors were decent.

>>11824
I can't get worked up about pronunciation. They're japanese names, sure, but the characters are speaking english and english has its own ideas about intonation. Plus it just seems fairly trivial compared to the abysmal voices, acting, and direction. Localised script will no doubt induce rage too.

Nagato's English VA is doing Tsukasa this time around, actually. Which I'm not too happy about, because Ruff just can't seem to emote properly sometimes... which was actually a plus when it came to Nagato, but...

I hope that people buy the DVDs anyway, because there will STILL be a subbed track (thank goodness!) and more money for DVDs = more money for Bandai = more money for KyoAni = more Lucky*Star!

A thought.. what are they going to do about Patty? I mean, she's supposed to be an American in Japan, and as such an English speaker, but everyone will already be speaking English in the dub.. how are they going to do the jokes about 'the hard Nihon words', and the selectrive pretending not to understand? That one has me puzzled. Has any other anime successfully done that before?

I just hope to god they don't go for making her spanish. That route is beaten into the ground.

Making her British will only work if they only lightly affect her jargon, making her more or less an American with a slight accent.

The voices were OK. I mean, have you seen the reactions to the Pani Poni Dash dub trailer? They were as mixed as these ones, and yet PPD is one of the best English anime dubs I've ever heard.

Why?

Because instead of trying to find voices that matched the Japanese ones, they looked for voices that fit the characters' personalities translated into English.

So, I think the dub sounds OK so far. I'll reserve further judgment until the DVD comes out and a full verdict can be established.

>>11842

A lesson in Anime history:

When an English speaker appears in Anime series, they have a funny foreign accent. When the series is dubbed, they almost always will irremediably give the character a STEREOTYPICAL TEXAS/SOUTHERN ACCENT.

Of course, they do the same with Kansai-ben.

In brief:
JP & US Audio, English Subs, scene galleries, Liner Notes (FTW!), clean OP, Promo clip and "The Adventures of Minoru Shiraishi" (This should be fun, heheh).

For those of us masochists who plan to spend more of our preciously saved and earned money, we also get the OP single, the Konata character CD, a Sailor Fuku T-Shirt (Wha?!) and a Choco-koro screen wipe. No Box yet. Still, not too shabby.

>JP & US Audio, English Subs

Consider it bought. As long as I don't have to hear Wendee Lee slowly but surely raping mai waifu's angelic vocal cords, it's a buy. This means A) I don't have to keep eps on my computer, B) I don't have to watch on YubTub, and C) I get the extras.

So long, money.

Nothing will ever be better than the original, but I think Wendee pulls off a nice Konata. (Check the official trailer on YouTube) If you want to talk about some serious rape of the vocal cords, listen to Kagami~n.

Yeah, but you can get a region free DVD player for like £20 in TESCO or ASDA and shit these days. Unless you want to wait 3 years for it to get released over here, if it's released here at all. Remember, we arn't even getting the first Haruhi DVD until the arse end of this year, and it's been out in the US for ages. If and when Lucky Star ever gets liscenced here, it'll no doubt be twice the price anyway. Even if you can't be arsed to go buy a region-free DVD player, just google the make and model of your dvd player and "region unlock" and you'll no doubt be able to unlock your DVD player anyway, if it's region locked. That's what I did.

Except the US release is only being separated into six parts, so which of those covers will make the cut is anyone's guess. And I kind of wish that the limited edition versions would come with the regular edition page as an alternative cover D:

Or, perhaps the volumes will be split down the middle as the the 6 regular volumes, then the 6 limited edition. -shrugs-

>> No.13222

Yes, the covers for the special editions and regular editions are being switched around for the American release. In the Japanese release, the ones on the top row were the special editions, and below the regular editions. For Vol 1 of the American release, the Kagami illustration on the bottom row will be the special edition cover, and the 2nd cover on the top row will be the regular cover. So it seems like they're picking them a bit randomly.
